David A. Ferio
Graduate Director, MHRM Program
When I made the decision to leave my corporate HR career for academia, the Rutgers Master of Human Resource Management program stood out to me from its competitors. Academically, it was clear that Rutgers had one of the top HR programs in the country due to both the overall quality of the program’s content and its consistent focus on HR Strategy. In fact, with the most frequently published and cited HR faculty – the Rutgers MHRM program can be seen as the standard by which other programs should be judged.
However, what impressed me just as much (because of my background recruiting HR graduates for Manufacturers Hanover, RCA/GE, and Schering Plough) was the ambition and work ethic of the program’s students. From a corporate recruiting perspective, the Rutgers MHRM program simply produced graduates who were the best possible fit for today’s business environment. Instead of asking, “what can the company do for me?” Rutgers MHRM alumni approached their responsibilities with a “how can I help” philosophy, firmly grounded in an understanding of how HR and business strategy interact.
When combined with a global perspective that is enhanced by the internationally diverse student body enrolled in the program – Rutgers MHRM graduates are well prepared for the challenges confronting HR as our economy becomes increasingly globalized. But, that doesn’t mean that we are content to rest on our laurels. Recently, we increased the number and choice of electives that the program offers to provide our students and the program as a whole with the opportunity to quickly adapt to new challenges in the increasingly complex global marketplace. It’s all part of our commitment to prepare our MHRM graduates for leadership roles in creating the workforce the future.
